LULAC Today

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), founded in 1929, is the oldest and most widely respected Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States of America. LULAC was created at a time in our country’s history when Latinos were denied basic civil and human rights, despite contributions to American society. the founders of LULAC created an organization that empowers its members to create and develop opportunities where they are needed most.

By becoming a collegiate LULAC council, college students have the opportunity to make a difference and leave a lasting impact through their advocating efforts aimed at advancing the rights and issues that affect our Latino community.

Today, with approximately 135,000 members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, LULAC is the largest and oldest Latino organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Latino Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 900 councils nationwide. In addition, the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (NESC), LULACʼs educational arm, provides counseling services to more than 18,000 Hispanic students per year at fifteen regional centers.

LULAC provides more than half a million dollars in scholar¬ships to Latino students each year, conducts citizenship and voter registration drives, develops low-income housing units, conducts youth leadership and mentoring programs, and seeks to empower the Latino community at the local, state, and national levels

Message from the 2023 Young Adults Council of the Year

Council of the Year: Collegiate council #22346, University of Texas at Dallas

With a dedicated commitment to fostering positive change and amplifying the voices of the Latino community, our Council #22346 at The University of Texas at Dallas has put together a series of impactful events that reflect the core values of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). By growing our council to ~50 active members over the last year, we have contributed a total of 217 volunteer hours to innovative fundraising efforts, civic participation, and hosting esteemed community leaders and a gubernatorial candidate who facilitated invaluable conversations on ways to enhance the well-being of the Latino community. To highlight some of our most meaningful events, we held a Collegiate Conference in February and welcomed nearly 100 LULAC guests. During this conference, we hosted a panel of successful LULAC figures, gave a presentation to youth and young adults detailing how to start and run a successful council, and provided a valuable networking opportunity for attendees. In collaboration with Somos Tejas, we planned a three-part series of events that aimed to educate and engage our members in civic action to advance Latinos in our community. We hosted their executive director, Ramiro Luna-Hinojosa, on campus to inform us about local redistricting. The following weekend we joined them in canvassing a neighborhood in Oak Cliff to increase the impact of the Latino vote in upcoming local elections. Finally, we participated in Somos Tejas’ Advocacy Day by taking a trip to the Texas Capitol to lobby for bills aligned with the betterment of the Latino community. Through these and many more events, we have proudly advocated, educated, engaged, and mobilized our council to participate in meaningful change within our Latino community. We hope to inspire other councils to do the same and we look forward to having another successful year at UT Dallas!

Best,
